A field of 45 cars attempted qualifying times. Casey Mears and Terry Cook were the only two drivers not to make the field. Many teams elected to work on race conditions on Friday due to rain forecasted for Saturday.
ExtenZe Racing driver and leading Cup Series Rookie of the Year candidate Kevin Conway was the fastest qualifying rookie with a qualfying position of 39.
Comments from ExtenZe Racing Ford Team Driver Kevin Conway after qualifying:
”I’m disappointed because I think I had more and the car had more. That is part of being a rookie and being new to some of these tracks. We picked up from practice, but there was still more to get.
”I went for a second lap, and it was better, but we didn’t have the grip like we did the first time out. We’ll be fine for the race.”
