CHARLOTTE, NC (Nov. 14, 2011) – As part of the ‘ExtenZe Local Hero’ program, 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Rookie-of-the-Year driver Kevin Conway is stepping up to assist the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) in the unsolved homicide case of Coral Gables Police Officer Walter Stathers. Conway’s No. 87 ExtenZe Toyota will carry an image of Officer Stathers along with MDPD contact information on the car’s deck lid for the Ford 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Saturday, November 19, 2011.
On, December 19, 1967, at 4:15 a.m. ET, Officer Stathers was on duty patrolling the residential neighborhood south of US1 and came across a prowler at 700 South Alhambra Circle in Coral Gables. Officer Stathers called over the radio for a K-9 officer to meet him at that location. Upon the arrival of the K-9 officer approximately 10 minutes later, Officer Stathers was found in the side yard of the residence with a gunshot wound to his head. Officer Stathers patrol car was located towards the rear of the residence and had struck a wall/porch area in the yard. Two witnesses saw a young, thin black male who fled southbound on a bicycle just after hearing the shot(s).
Officer Stathers was 44 years old and had been a police officer for eighteen years with the Coral Gables PD. He was married with one son in high school when he was killed. His widow passed away about two months ago.

“At ExtenZe and NEMCO Motorsports we like to do our part to give back to the communities and markets we race in and couldn’t be more thrilled to help out and honor the Miami-Dade Police Department with the Officer Walter Stathers case,” said Conway. “This case has escaped his family, the people of Coral Gables, Dade County and law enforcement long enough. We just want to step up and shed a new light on this case the best we can. With the reach and platform NASCAR gives us we hope that by carrying the image of Officer Stathers along with contact information on my car we will reach that one person out there that may know something that could help solve this case.”
The ‘ExtenZe Local Hero’ program pays tribute to people who have gone to great lengths to make a difference in their communities.
